One of our preferred places to go for porridge. The porridge is very smooth, and the fritters are always well-fried and go perfectly with it. I always order the fish congee, which has a lighter taste. The fish slices are well-marinated and not fishy at all. I also like the ginger flavor in the soup. My family usually orders the pork congee, which is more flavorful compared to the fish porridge. For those who prefer a stronger taste, you can add soy sauce yourself (available when dining in). During peak periods, you may have to wait up to 25–30 minutes for your order to be ready, even for takeaway orders.
Kitty and I resolved to cycle to Sin Heng Kee Porridge in Hougang for our evening meal. This establishment enjoys considerable popularity within the area, renowned for its delectable porridge, and is almost perpetually subject to a lengthy queue. They proffer a diverse selection of porridge options, including a clay pot frog porridge, which appears to be a more recent addition to their menu. Their method of order taking is rather distinctive. They employ cardboard cut outs upon which all orders are inscribed prior to being submitted to the kitchen staff. I myself opted for the pork with century egg porridge, with the further addition an egg, whilst Kitty selected the meatball with shredded chicken. The aggregate expenditure for both bowls amounted to approximately $15. We also elected to share a single youtiao, fried dough stick. The porridge proved to be of excellent quality, and the youtiao was also particularly commendable. It is, perhaps, regrettable that they do not offer beverages such as soya bean, as this would have provided a most agreeable accompaniment. The service was both expeditious and efficient. Subsequent to the placement of our order, we were furnished with a numbered tag, and our porridge was duly delivered to our table upon its preparation. In summation, Sin Heng Kee Porridge is indeed a most agreeable establishment within our area, and I would commend it unreservedly to anyone in search of authentic Cantonese porridge.
I wish I can give 6 stars!! Friendly cashier and staff who will help you find seat. And porridge is the BEST I’ve ever eaten. I had the signature number 1 porridge and it’s filled with ingredients. SO WORTH IT!!! Youtiao was also crispy and yummy!!
I’ve always walked past this place but never tried it as the queues were so long. Now I understand why. I had the double pork porridge and it was served piping hot the way I like it. The meat was tender and delicious and the porridge was flavourful and smooth. Not too bland or too salty and it was porky without being overwhelming. The yew tiao was also fresh and crunchy and went perfectly with the porridge. Service was fast but even though it was not too packed we still had to share a table. Will definitely be back to try the other dishes but when it’s not too crowded.
First time here, and I gotta say they live up to the hype. The viscosity is good and the taste slightly on the heavier side (suits me); generous amounts of ingredients given (couldn't finish them) and in my case the pork slices and meat balls were very tender and well marinated. Very affordable pricing too, no wonder the queue never ends. The only downside is perhaps the youtiao being the more doughy type and can be more crispy on the outside, but still good nonetheless.
