Baba chew specialised in Asian, Peranakan signature dishes and is located along East Coast road. They also serve some western dishes and unique cocktails as well. When we went for dinner on a weekend, it was pretty quiet. We ordered Kueh Pie Tee as starters and several mains before finishing off with their Chendol as dessert. The place is very clean and the dining atmosphere is great. Service is good and acceptable. Below are some dishes we prefer and would recommend. 1. Chap Chye: Authentic flavour 2. Assam curry seabass: our favourite dish for the night. The seabass is well fried and crispy. That Assam curry is spot on and goes very well with the rice! Must order

The restaurant has a cosy and quiet vibe, which I appreciated. The staff were warm and welcoming too—they greeted us with a smile when we walked in and even served sparkling water automatically, which was a nice touch. As for the food, it was honestly a bit hit or miss. The beef rendang was one of the better dishes: the beef was nicely braised until tender, and the rendang sauce was rich, aromatic, and packed with flavour. The East Coast platter, though, was quite disappointing. The satays were inconsistent—some were decent, but a few were pretty tough. The oysters were a little too salty, possibly because some seawater or salt residue wasn’t washed off properly. The mantou also missed the mark for me: they were on the tougher side, lacking that crisp exterior while not being fluffy enough inside. The prawns were the most forgettable part of the platter, and I honestly couldn’t really tell what sauce they were cooked in. The kueh pie tee was decent enough—nothing particularly memorable, but no major complaints either. The local coffee was unfortunately pretty meh. It didn’t taste like how local coffee should, and there was a slightly funky note to it that felt off. I’d probably skip that next time. Overall, they clearly can make some good Nyonya dishes, but it really depends on what you order. Personally, I probably wouldn’t return, though I’d still say it’s worth trying once.

The executive set lunch was so worth and delicious. The kueh pie tee tastes good too. The crispy pork (not crispy) and matcha tiramisu (not much matcha taste but the tinge of jasmine taste is special) were mediocre. However, during lunch time where there weren’t many people, our orders were delayed and probably forgotten…

We had kueh pie tee(so tiny that I dun know what am I eating), ayam buah keluak (taste is perfect but chicken is so tough and way overcooked), Beef rendang (sauce doesn’t go, too fusion, I hope they know what they are curating and for that kind of price, it is exortion), chap chye (over cooked with taste that is not so peranakan). Their portions are so small, not for sharing. First time and last time

Ambience is nice. Service not too bad. Food I wouldn’t say it’s authentic Peranakan but more fusion like. Still the beef rendang was cooked well, meat was tender but could be more flavourful. Ayam Buah Keluah as you can see from the photo, the chicken wasn’t exactly infused with the buah keluah. Not too bad still. My fav is the burnt Brussels sprout. Abit pricey I would say.
