Gunkanjima Digital Museum

The most interactive museum in Nagasaki! We loved how they used modern media to bring history to life. The AI video and soundtrack made the storytelling feel incredibly vivid. A must-visit if you prefer an immersive experience over traditional exhibits. We didn't go to the boat tour after that as we did the VR tour (think it's gonna somewhat the same). Very happy to learn so much abt Hashima island, foreign trade and the industrialisation of Japan. We would recommend this to anyone visiting Nagasaki!

On one hand, it's interesting to see what the island used to look like and currently looks like. The tidbits about daily life there is also interesting. However, for the price of the museum and what was presented (mostly sit-down videos), it's hard to recommend. Would rather do this as part of a tour package than standalone.

The Gunkanjima Digital Museum was an excellent addition to our Battleship Island tour. We understand its 1800JPY as a stand alone item. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the small café was a nice spot to relax before or after the visit. The VR experience was a standout, offering an immersive look at life on the island. The museum is compact but well presented — about an hour is enough to explore and enjoy everything.

Entry price was a bit rough, but it makes a bit more sense when you realise it’s there to contribute to conservation efforts of the island. Really enjoyed the technologically innovative ways they conveyed the conditions/landscape etc of the Island, with a motion sensor to pet the island mascot, computer displays, VR, video game controllers, immersive wide screens to simulate the mining experience (like a motion simulator without motion…but you could almost feel it), a 5 screen floor/ceiling presentation with a 3D renderings of a girl to narrate the average day in Gunkanjima. Not a fan of the use of AI to generate videos. There’s even a previous resident that gives talks, although this is in Japanese so I couldn’t quite understand. Still cool. At risk of sounding coldhearted, I still don’t 100% understand why it’s a world heritage site, but it’s a great immersive museum with innovative techniques used to present information and interact without having the physically visit the island

An interesting experience especially for those who don't go out to the island. There is a really good virtual reality headset view of the ruins and interactive information on both the mining and lifestyle on the island. The museum caters well for English and Japanese languages. Today was a very foggy day so shore based activities are good. Has a cafe on the ground floor, and toilets available on most floors. This is a 3 level building, there is also a lift for those with mobility issues.
