Fortaleza de San Felipe

An interesting building, pretty well preserved and with a lot of history. The museum has a lot of informative posters, but is very light on actual exhibits, which is a pity. Some more state of the art video or projection displays would add a great deal, as would audio guides, now pretty much standard in similar monuments. Unfortunately, such few artifacts as there are, mainly cannon, the carriages are in a dire state and in need of replacement as they look beyond repair. The actual structure however is in a remarkably good state and offers spectacular views over the sea and anchorage. Overall, well worth a visit, but they could make it a lot better, a bit of a missed opportunity.

If you like history, this is a must. At just $4 U.S. dollars a person to enter it is a great bargain. There is a self guided tour option or just walk around (all the information is given in multiple languages) and see the fort. Great views of the port and cruise ship from this vantage point.

We visited Fortaleza de San Felipe, a 16th-century Spanish fortress turned museum—once protecting the coast from pirates and later serving as a political prison. Cool sea breezes drifted over weathered stone walls as lush green grass met the blue ocean, with our cruise ship, MSC World America, rising behind it—where history and modern travel meet. The grass is a bit slippery after the rain; one of our friends fell - so be careful and cautious!!

Was doing a city tour and it stopped at this castle. Interesting place with nicely manicured grounds. It’s on the water so it has beautiful surroundings. There is a fee to get in ($4 USD I think) and there isn’t a whole lot to see there. Overall, a decent way to spend 30 mins.

A must-see monument full of rich history! It’s very well-maintained and offers stunning views of the coast. Entry is only a 200 DOP donation, which is a bargain for the experience. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in Puerto Plata.
