cryptovision was founded in 1999 by Andreas and Markus Hoffmeister as a technology start-up and a spin-off of the Institute of Experimental Mathematics of the University of Essen. The company is privately held and in addition to the founder Markus Hoffmeister the following investors currently hold shares of cryptovision: Bundesdruckerei, tbg, Stella Polaris, Sparkasse Gelsenkirchen, Identiv, Floris Capital, and Ernst G. Mayer.

As of January 8, 2023, the Cryptovision D-Trust TSE V 1.0 is no longer valid. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is required to certify technical security devices according to Section 146a Paragraph 3 Sentence 2 of the German Fiscal Code. The worst part: mistakes happen, but since the notification in July (over two months ago), Cryptovision has failed to find a solution for the affected customers. One star is still too much.
