One can spend hours visiting the museum, attending a 45-60 minute workshop of your choosing and visiting the store. Lots of clever designs to discover.
This is not just a furniture store. It is also a fabulous design museum. There is so much excellent furniture design on display with explanations of how it is made, where the wood comes from, the logic and principles of the furniture makers. I would recommend this as the number one place to go if you are visiting Asahikawa. The staff are very welcoming and happy to explain anything. Plus there is a lovely cafe.
Amazing spot in Asahikawa, as full of beautiful wooden furniture, cool designs, and serious craftsmanship. It’s like walking through a gallery of Japan’s best design. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in Hokkaido!
I went to the art center with my parents from Kanagawa three days ago. We can look around the various Asahikawa furniture there. Asahikawa is famous for furniture, so there are many craftsmen in Asahikawa. Each furniture is really unique. Some tables and chairs are quite expensive. We can feel the craftsmanship in the furniture. I tried to sit down on the chair. It was really comfortable and my but was not hurt. They exhibit the history of Asahikawa furniture and how Asahikawa city has been promoting it for over 50 years. I am impressed by it.
For all who have an interest in design or furniture making. This place is a must visit. As a Swedish furniture carpenter I was in heaven. Seeing so much furniture taking inspiration from Scandinavian design was very cool. Probably took over 300 photos for my own inspiration.
